SO… here we are again… Another 30 posts this month. I have plenty of blog fodder with my homeschooling, crafts and life in general. I hope you’ll join me this month.

What would you like to see on the blog this month? Homeschool lessons? Confessions? Craft Tutorials? Giveaways? I’d love to hear from you. Are you participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge… let me know so I can stop by and say hi! It’s not too late to sign up!

What’s in A Name

I decided to change things up with my blog. For one, I moved from Blogger to WordPress… the jury is still out on how I feel about this. I like changing things up every now and then and trying new things… so… we’ll see how it goes.

Second… I changed the name. Until now, my blog was titled “Little Monkeys… How to Live Life with Three Little Monkeys by your Side.” I started this blog just over a year ago as an outlet for my interests and hobbies. It has been a hodge podge of homeschool, crafts, recipes and general musings. I tried to bring a little more definition recently, as explained here.  I also realized (well I’ve known all along) that my children are more than little monkeys just hanging onto me. While at times, I do feel like we live in a jungle, I want to develop more of a long term vision for my children. I don’t homeschool for the heck of it. We don’t read Scripture for giggles. We are instilling lasting truths in our children’s heart. We are teaching them early to rely on God for EVERYTHING. We are teaching them that God has a will.. for everything… whether it be how your children experience school, who they marry, when they are potty trained, how they dress, how they learn… etc. God has a will.

So.. the new name… Plants and Pillars… comes from this verse:

Then our sons in their youth

will be like well-nurtured plants,

and our daughters will be like pillars

carved to adorn a palace.

Psalm 144: 12

I read a lot of blogs about raising boys. I read books about raising girls. We have both in our home. Despite what the post modern world might say, boys and girls are distinctly different… and that’s okay. We are designed with different needs, purposes and desires… and that’s okay. I will not make excuses for training my girls in femininity and my son in masculinity. I will not be ashamed to encourage my girls to be girls and my son to be a boy. God made no mistakes when he put them in the bodies that he did.

I desire for my son to be like a well nurtured plant whose roots go deep. For him to endure much pruning to be the man he was intended to be. For his roots to go deep, his stem/ trunk to grow tall and his leaves to spread wide… so that his influence will be great. I don’t want any of this for his glory or mine… but for the Lord’s.

I desire for my daughters to be like graceful pillars, carved to adorn a palace. I so desire for them to be strong women. The world thinks that to be a Christian woman means to be weak and plain… I don’t think that’s what God intends. I desire for my girls to be able to stand up to the storms of life and bear much weight without cracking. I hope that they will be an encouragement and support to those who are in their lives.. whether they marry and have children one day or not. I hope beyond hope their identity is found in God and who he has made them to be and NOT in the magazines at the check out counter and the unobtainable standard set forth by the world.

So… that’s why I changed the name. Now… when I look at this blog, when I write on this blog… I will have a reminder in my face of why I am in this whole business of parenting. It is easy for my husband and I to get lost in the day to day and forget the long term. I hope to write more in the coming weeks of our vision for parenting.

I still intend for this blog to be about homeschooling. I still intend to share and promote my etsy shop  and crafty ventures. I still intend to muse about this and that. I hope you’ll join me. I hope you’ll be encouraged. I hope you’ll encourage me.

Now… why don’t you head on over to the Hip Homeschool Hop and see what the other Bloggers are up to today!

What’s in A Blog

I am coming up on my one year anniversary of this blog. I started writing this blog as an outlet for my interests and pursuits. I didn’t want to clog our family blog with various hobbies and interests. Now that I have been going with this blog, I think it’s time to bring a little definition and purpose. I was also encouraged by another blogger to define my blog and stay within that definition. So.. here goes.

First… who am I?
I am a child of God. I am a wife. I am a mom. I am a crafter. These are in order of importance in case you are wondering.

Who I am will determine how and what I write on this blog. I am a child of God. Christianity is not about Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings for me. Just like my children are in my face and needing me all day long, I need God… all day, every day. I need him to direct me, love me, lead me, comfort me, discipline me. If you have read my Confessions of A Seminary Wife, then you know that I have struggled in my walk with the Lord these last couple of years… but that does not change who He is or how much I need Him. Being a child of God defines how I think about everything else in my life.

I am a wife. My husband is the second most important relationship in my life. My husband cares deeply for me and the kids and has overcome much in life to become the man he is today. He has sought to honor the Lord and me since the beginning of our relationship. I am a big fan.

I am a mom. We have four kids. I have learned so much from these little monkeys. They are indeed a blessing as well as a training tool in my life. Because of them, I have been stretched beyond what I thought I could handle. I have learned more about love and commitment because of them. Suzanna Wesley once said about motherhood, For the next twenty years, this is what I do (paraphrase). Motherhood is my longest running job to date. The hours are long and the breaks are few, but I do love this job.

I am a crafter. I have always loved learning new crafty things. I was always drawing and making things when I was little. I loved going to the craft store. I learned to knit after our second child was born, crochet after our third and most recently, I have learned to sew. I have been blessed to use these skills to contribute in a small way to our family’s finances.

So… what does all this mean for this blog:
I will seek to honor the Lord in what I write… whether it be about homeschooling, crafts, orphans, marriage or life in general. I will seek to respect and honor my husband in what I write. I will share lessons I have learned about marriage and motherhood. I will share practical homeschool ideas as well as failures and successes in our own homeschool adventure. I will share some do it yourself craft ideas for kids and grown- ups. I will promote my crafty business ventures.

The header of this blogger use to say “How to Live Life with Three Little Monkeys.” This is still a how- to blog. I live life with my four little monkeys by loving the Lord, loving my husband, homeschooling and seeking to care for my family in a Proverbs 31 kind of way. I am no perfect… Lord knows I’m not… but I am honest.. and I am real. I think real, every day stories from real, everyday people are encouraging to those of us in the trenches. I hope that I am able to encourage those who read this blog. I hope that I am able to pass some wisdom on as well as gain some on the way.

Ultimate Blog Challenge (1)

I am not completely sure why, but I decided to join the Ultimate Blog Challenge. I thought it would be fun to see if I could actually follow through with blogging thirty posts in thirty days.

I started this blog in the fall. It has served as a place for me to write confessions about being a seminary wife, homeschooling, crafts, giveaways, and other things. I don’t really know how to classify this blog. I mean the title says that it is “how to live life with three little monkeys by your side.”

And I guess the sporadic-ness and variety of topics found here is a pretty good snap shot of what life is like with three kids.

But here’s my question for you…

What would you like to see more of on this blog for the next thirty days?

– craft tutorials?
– crochet patterns?
– homeschool lessons?
– giveaways?
– confessions?
– tips for life with little ones?
– book talks?

I’m Still Here

I’m still here. I haven’t posted much lately… it’s been crazy busy around here. We are hosting a backyard Bible club at our home this week. My husband is in class all day, everyday this week (which means I am without a computer… not necessarily a bad thing).

Just wanted to check in with the blog-o-sphere… I’ll be back soon… promise!

This is the One

I am done playing around with templates for now… this is the one. I like it… it’s pretty. It has nothing to do with monkeys… but that’s okay.

Thanks for hanging with me during my identity crisis.
