What’s in the Bible Review and GIVEAWAY

It’s Give Away Time!!!

Have you seen this new series put out by the creator of Veggie Tales? It’s called “Buck Denver Asks What’s in the Bible” and takes kids (and adults) cover to cover through the Bible. Buck Denver is a News Man who is curious about the Bible.  I must say, I have learned so much from watching these videos and so have my kids (ages 2, 4, 7, and 9). It holds the attention of each one of them in a different way.

The videos are filled with colorful characters in the form of puppets. There’s someone for everyone. My personal favorites are Clive and Ian (explorers), Captain Pete (who sounds suspiciously like Pa Grape) and Sunday School Lady with her magic Flannel Graph!

I was a HUGE fan of Veggie Tales back in the day (before I even had kids), but I have to tell you that I was a little frustrated as I saw the series moving away from Bible stories and more into Moral stories. I mean, having good morals is all well and good, but nothing beats the Bible!

When I heard that Phil Vischer (creator of Veggie Tales and What’s in the Bible) had come out with this new series, I was a little skeptical and really didn’t give it much attention. A friend of mine was telling me about the videos and that she and her girls had been watching them and really were learning cool things about the Bible. I asked if we could borrow the videos and was hooked the moment we started watching. My kids LOVE them! They often ask to watch them and can’t wait until we get a new one.

Big Brother and Big Sister really love the word play and silly jokes that can be found throughout. The videos are fast paced and change scenery often to keep the attention of the kids. Sometimes it can move too fast for little ones (like preschool age), but for the most part, they are a win in my book. Little Sis and Baby Girl like the songs.

The songs are super creative and help you learn words like “pentateuch” and “septuagint.”

We watched Volume 1 recently. I like that it doesn’t just jump into Creation and Adam and Eve. The video has two 25 minute episodes. You get to join a little boy name Michael as he is watching the DVDs on a car trip to visit his grandmother. His commentary is cute and clever.

In the first episode of Volume 1, you learn what the Bible is, who put it together, how it tells the whole story of God’s rescue plan. This episode sets the stage for the rest of the series. Episode 2 is about who wrote the Bible, how God inspired the writers to tell the story of God’s rescue plan. It introduces the book of Genesis and explains how it sets the stage for all the events of history.

A couple of things did occur in the video of which I was not a fan. In episode 1, they ask “What is the Bible.” They have a scientist explain that it is paper with a leather cover, etc. Sunday School Lady then comes in and says “Never send a scientist to do a Sunday School teacher’s job.”  The series does a good job later on incorporating Science in a positive light, but I think this was an unnecessary cut. Another item was how the series skirts around the issue of young earth/ old earth. They do not take a stand either way, but say there are many theories… and really, that’s fine. The goal of the series is the Big Picture of God’s Rescue Plan.

I think Phil Vischer is a super talented story teller and is very creative in how he presents HUGE, GROWN UP concepts in a ways that children can understand. They may not understand everything that they are hearing, but they are hearing it, soaking it in, storing it away and it will stick with them.

I am actually so excited about this series of videos that we have ordered the VBS for our church to use this summer.

I am also excited to offer Volume 1 to One of YOU!!!!!! If you’d like to win a copy of Volume 1 of What’s in the Bible, simply leave a comment below and let me know your favorite resource for teaching the Bible to your children!

Little House on the Prairie Style Bonnet GIVE AWAY!!!!

It has been QUITE a while since I’ve done a giveaway. As you know, my kids have been really interested in the Little House on the Prairie Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I have been wanting to make the girls some prairie dresses and pinafores. I didn’t want to leave Big Brother out, so I was very excited when he got a cowboy hat last week at VBS (they were doing a western theme). I’ll just grab a pair of suspenders from Goodwill and he’ll be able to head out on the prairie in style.

Now that Big Brother was taken care of, I felt better about starting on the girls’ outfits. I started at the top, with the bonnets.

Big Sis and her cousin are modeling the bonnets. I was so excited about the way these turned out, that I decided to offer one as a giveaway on the blog!

My girls have been thrilled with their bonnets. They have worn them almost non- stop. They play outside, inside, visit restaurants, go on long car rides and so much more!

Oh… and they also eat popsicles while wearing bonnets!

I cannot get enough of these cute bonnets! I would LOVE to give one away. So… here are the details:

The give away is for ONE bonnet, just like the one in the pictures. The bonnet is made from cotton, blue calico fabric. Here’s the great thing.. you get to PICK THE SIZE… small (18 months to about 6 years old), medium (5- 10 years old), or large (11- adult).  The bonnet is made from 100 % cotton (prewashed) and is completely machine washable. This Giveaway ENDS Saturday, June 30th at Midnight.

Magnificent Magnifying

Have I mentioned that we like Melissa and Doug products at our house?

For this week’s featured products, I’d like for you to check out Melissa and Doug’s Magnifying Glasses. We have had and enjoyed these in our house for a while now. We use these in make believe play, exploration walks, checking under rocks and leaves in the backyard. Surprisingly enough.. these are great for open ended play!!!

You can get up close and personal with your sister!

You can be a private eye (we’ve been reading a lot of detective stories)

You can get a good look at what’s inside your brother’s mouth… if you dare!

Let me just add one more thing to sweeten the deal: The kids and I were at a specialty toy store today and saw some Melissa and Doug toys. In fact, these magnifying glasses were there and do you know what?!? The price was jacked up so high, I nearly fell on the floor! You won’t find outrageous prices in my Open Sky Shop. These fun Magnifying Glasses are just $6 each. These are just two of the many gifts under $10 you’ll find in the shop! Don’t forget… buy from the shop in November and you’ll be entered to win a gift card of your choosing!
