Root Vue Farm (5)

When I was teaching, I always did my plants and seeds unit in April. This was always a favorite of the kids. My kids love to plant things as well. We have a chive plant that made it through our last move and is somehow still thriving.
For Christmas this past year, we got this great gift from our cousins. Spring has arrived and today is a rainy day… so I decided it would be a great day to break this out and get our hands dirty.

Look how happy the kids are on the box. You can find this product here, among other places. It’s only $20 and can be used several times. PS… I am not promoting this product for any other reason than I think it is really fun and educational.
We followed the directions for assembling the farm and mixing the dirt. It comes with eight of those soil disks that expand when water is added. Little Sis thoroughly enjoyed chopping up and stirring the dirt.
The Farm comes with carrot, onion and radish seeds. We planted a few of each and logged the date in the booklet that also came with the kit. The kit’s instructions include several different experiments you can do with plants and how you can use the farm with different types of flowers and plants.
Now that we have set up our little farm, we will wait to see which plant sprouts up first. The kids will journal about and record the changes that they see as the plants grow.
The farm also has a self watering system so that you cannot over water it. This is great for people like me who most definitely do not have a green thumb. The kids will monitor the water level and pour more water in as needed.
If all goes according to plan, we will be able to see what happens under the soil as the plants take root and begin to grow. We usually grab a few of the little seed kits from the Dollar Section at Target around this time of year as well. Planting things and watching them grow is so fun!
