Text Message Tuesday- James 1:27

I realize that I slacked off on posting my text message Tuesdays. My apologies. Today’s verse is James 1:27-

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world

We have several friends who have adopted and who are in process of adopting from Africa. Our niece is adopted from right here in the United States. The kids have been asking a lot of questions about what it means to be an orphan… how were they born if they don’t have a mom or dad? how to they grow? how do they get food? how to they learn to use the potty? These and more are the questions on the minds of a 4 and 5 year old.

I often hear the first part of this verse… to take care of the widows and the orphans… but not so much the second.. to keep oneself unstained from the world. Other translations say “polluted.” What does that look like? How can you be all things to all men as Paul was and still maintain your integrity and remain unstained by the world. How can we reach a lost and hurting world and yet remain aware of the fact that as Christians, this is not our home? How can we dare to stand up for the truth, defend the defenseless, be a voice for the voiceless in a post-modern world where conviction is viewed as intolerance and nobody wants to commit fully their lives to anyone or anything?

Want to get involved with caring for the orphans of the world? I am just now learning about all the options… here are blogs/sites that I suggest (although there are countless more).

Text Message Tuesday- Proverbs 29:11

A fool gives full vent to his anger,

but a wise man keeps himself under control.

Proverbs 29:11

**it doesn’t say we can never be angry…just that a fool gives full vent to his anger**

Text Message Tuesday- Proverbs 16:24

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 16:24

Object Lesson (suggested in My Father’s World 1st Grade):

“Hold up two spoons- one full of honey and one full of garbage. Ask ‘Which one do you want to eat? Why?’. Let the student eat the honey. Then say, ‘Honey is good, isn’t it? God says that pleasant words are like honey- they cheer you up and make you feel better. But mean and unkind words are like garbage. They are terrible. What kind of words do YOU like? What kind of words do you think OTHER PEOPLE like to hear? What kind of words do you think GOD wants us to say?’ “

Text Message Tuesday- Proverbs 21:23

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

Proverbs 21:23

I am glad my monkey boy is learning this verse this week. We are constantly disciplining and teaching him to use kind, helpful words. He has had a huge vocabulary from the start- at his 2 year old well check, the doctor asked if he had at least a 50 word vocabulary. We went home and started writing all the words he knew- we gave up after about 1000 (not including songs he knew). I don’t mention this to brag or say my child is better than another… As I have told him, God has blessed him with a lot of words to use and he has the choice to use them well or not. As we talk about this verse this week, we are talking about what it means to guard our mouths and what kinds of calamity can come when we are not on guard.

Whoever said “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was misinformed. Words are a powerful weapon. Broken bones tend to heal much quicker than broken hearts.

5 He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in
harvest is a son who brings shame.

Proverbs 10:5

We are learning this week about having a good work ethic. This
morning, we were taking a look at the chore chart. The monkey boy
realized his sister had earned more stars than him thus having a
greater reward. He decided that he would have to work harder this
week so he wouldn’t be left behind!

Next lesson… How to handle the money we earn.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 9:10

The little monkeys started scripture memory this week. Proverbs 9:10 is the verse of the week. Here are the questions I presented to the kids:

What does it mean to fear the Lord?
Where does wisdom begin?
What is wisdom and why should we want it?

Here’s a little encouragement for those of us with young children:

He tends his flock like a shepherd:

He gathers the lambs in his arms

and carries them close to his heart;

he gently leads those that have young.

Isaiah 40:11

Being a mom to young children can be a lonely, frustrating and tiring job. Isn’t it neat to know that God is we’ll aware of the things we do and he is gently leading us as we go through our day?!
